Amy Swinford – Calhoun International
Amy Swinford is a small business owner, Army veteran, and graduate of V-WISE Jacksonville 2013. As Co-Owner and Chief Operating Officer of Calhoun International, a Management Consulting and Information Technology company providing support to federal, state, and commercial clients, her operational and financial leadership have led the company to a compound annual growth rate of 50% since 2005, the addition of over 50 employees, and consecutive listings in the Inc. 5000 list.
How It Happened: “Facing the end of government service, we wanted to start a business using our military experience to provide customized intelligence analysis products & services to our customers, but on a much smaller scale than other contractors. We thought we could use analytic methodologies to benefit commercial customers.”
Mrs. Swinford served for 12 years as an Intelligence Analyst in the U.S. Army with tours in Germany, Italy and the Middle East. Following her military service, she was appointed as an Intelligence Officer in the civil service and selected to attend the inaugural IBM/Harvard Management Development Program at Defense Intelligence Agency. She retired in 2009 after 20 years of Federal service. According to Mrs. Swinford,
“My military experience has been invaluable. It has helped us build an incredible team with in-depth, hands on experience using intelligence methodologies to meet emerging requirements. We also take ‘supply economy’ to heart and run a very lean operation to keep our costs down.”
She lives in Florida with her spouse, is active in her church and community, and enjoys relaxing on the Gulf Coast’s award-winning beaches. To fellow entrepreneurs, she advises:
“Always remember where you came from. Be true to yourself and your goals. Stay humble. Be positive – if you think you can’t, you won’t!”
